You can't stop the bodies from rotting, sir, but you can still save my mind. Save my tongue before it falls out, save my thoughts before they decay like the corpses, like our art. All you need to do is ask.
(Short free-verse/prose piece)
The room is rotting
my mouth is rotting my mind is rotting my mind is rotting
they don't speak the bodies don't speak they can't you know.
SIR HAVE I EVER TOLD YOU
no I haven't of course I haven't
and that's why my mouth is rotting
the words are eating at the back of my tongue and it will fall out soon
And it's all your fault but I'll never blame you sir I never could ever.
And I want to SING
sing like they sang when their tongues were pinned to the walls
And it's every note at once and it's beautiful.
And the sound will come out of me and you'll ask what's wrong yes you will sir
please please ask me and I'll say
sir you don't know but I'll tell you
But you won't have asked in the first place and so I won't answer
and the words will roll and wash in my mind and decay and it doesn't even matter
THEY DON'T SPEAK DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME BUT I SPEAK
And the room is rotting
and it would stop if you would just ask
