Another short story about a fallen friend
His nature was Lonely, but that was only because he insisted on pushing people away.
"Sorry about Edgeworth. He's kind of a pervy old man."
"Thanks." I grinned at him.
"Sure…" He blushed and looked away.
While Roark and Hiro talked, Max and I talked as well.
"Hey, uh…" He looked up at me as I asked, "What's Hiro like? He seems nice, but…"
"He's the nicest human I've ever met." he says right away. "I mean, he's so nice and supportive. And when Link passed away… He really cares for all his Pokémon. Even Beethoven."
"The asshole you replaced."
"Oh…" I felt kinda bad about that.
"Hey, don't feel bad! He was a jerk! He bit me when we first met!"
"Really?" I giggled.
"Yeah! I think he bites everybody!"
"That's a strange habit."
"You're telling me!"
"Okay, then! Time for some training after I catch another Pokémon!"
I couldn't watch.
The Onix trapped him somehow. He couldn't be switched out and we couldn't run.
Chatter stepped in and Hiro caught the Onix, but at the cost of Max's life.
Hiro named him Marx, but he will never be Max. He will never be better than Max was.
I was the only one he didn't push away.
But I never got to know exactly what I was to him.
"Max…" I tried not to let my voice betray my feelings. I wanted to be brave for him, to not show how torn up inside I was, but that was the first time I had ever wished that I had eyes. So I could cry for him. "Goodbye. I wish we could have gotten to know each other better. I would have loved to travel with you."
Goodbye, Max. I'm so sorry I didn't just let you kill that Onix. My selfishness cost you your life, and I will never forget that.
